Abstract

The insertion of the province of Santiago del Estero in the national economy is known as “marginal”, an area specialized in a reduced group of products that are not very important in the national production, generally unrelated to the goods and services that make up the national export base. For decades, official economic policy has tended to counteract this traditional image; however, the specific orientation of public spending has only resulted in the development of multiple intermediation and service activities that are scarcely linked to the deepening of the exploitation of regional absolute advantages.
The lack of an integrated production structure determines the establishment of fluid exchange relations with other regions. The incipient industrialization tends to develop an intense commercial activity where the exchange of raw materials placed in the major industrial centers prevails with the need to complement the supply of local consumption. In this line, the growth of retail trade activity stands out, where the sale of products destined to satisfy the consumption needs of family groups (food and beverages, beverages, food and beverages, food and beverages, food and beverages, etc.), especially in urban areas, prevails.
(food and beverages, clothing, household equipment, etc.) and the development of personal services (private health, passenger transportation, recreation, etc.).
The document advances in the search for sources of information, methodological foundations and estimates (with a higher level of disaggregation and updated up to the year 2022) to define the provincial, regional and national indicators of structure and dynamics that have allowed the hypotheses proposed in this study to be put forward.
